Yan District is a unique district in the state of Kedah. The natural surroundings which consist of the Jerai Mountain Range which then extends into the ocean areas in Tanjung Jaga and the Straits of Melacca.


According to history, the pronunciation of the word Yan was taken from the ending of the 'Sendayan' which is a type of plant and in which it was found in a great amount before. However, there are some opposed to the ideas as they believed that the word Yan is actually a short form from the word 慏urian� fruit. Nevertheless, Yan District has marked its own history.


There are a few places in this district which is populated by the Acheh group. There is one village known as the Acheh Village and its distance from Yan Town is 2km. The migration of the Acheh people to this place can be explained based on historical facts.


Yan District was officially opened in 1904, 1324 Hijrah, and at that time, Yan areas were administered by a wealthy man named Syed Othman Al-Qadri which was given the rights by KBDYMM Tuanku Sultan Kedah. The main duty was to collect tax and to administer the District until there was the involvement from the English people. The English people have elected Tengku Mansur Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid as the new Administrative Officer which also holds the responsibility as the Judge, Land Tax and Trade Revenues Collector. However, the first official Yan District Officer is Dato' Indera Segara Madi.
